Jacob Porat: Desert Spirits 2 The two series of works entitled Desert Spirits were the result of two visits, firstly to the Sinai Desert in 1996, and secondly to the region of Mitzpe Ramon in 1999. The visit in 1996, which was my first real encounter with this desert (after years of refusing suggestions to visit, without ever bothering to query my reasons) was an amazing experience… not only was I confronted by the glory of the varied desert scenery, but furthermore I realized that the spirit of this desert was already present in many of my works, mostly from the 1980s (without my having been aware of the fact at the time). The meeting three years later with the desert landscapes in the Mitzpe Ramon area not only made me more aware of the link between my works mentioned above and the desert scenery, but also led me to the unification of some of those earlier works with the photographs I took in the years 1996 and 1999. The Shrub 2006 (Mixed Media on Canvas 70x100 cm) At the end of 1999 (or, more accurately, from 3.12.99 to 1.1.2000) I exhibited a selection of works from the two series, under the title Gods, Animals, and Spirits in the Desert. The works were exhibited in parallel at two venues in Mitzpe Ramon: at the Visitors' Center (Merkaz Hamevakrim) and at the Ramon Inn (the exhibition at the Visitors' Center was extended for a further month at their request). Meanwhile, after the exhibition at Mitzpe Ramon, new works were added to the two series, and in May/June 2005 I exhibited a further and different selection from among these works at the Rena Shani Theater in Hadera. Here, at Heichal Hatarbut in Rishon Lezion, four new and relatively large works (2006, mixed media on canvas, 70x100 cm) are shown for the first time. September 2000

יעקב פורת: רוחות מדבר 2 שתי הסדרות של העבודות, שמכונות "רוחות מדבר", נולדו לאחר שני ביקורים שערכתי במדבר סיני בשנת 1996 ובערבות של אזור מצפה רמון ב 1999. הפגישה עם מדבר סיני ב 1996, שהייתה למעשה פגישתי הממשית הראשונה עם המדבר הזה (לאחר ששנים דחיתי הצעות לבקר בו - מבלי שטרחתי מעולם להבהיר לעצמי את הסיבה לכך) הייתה פגישה "מהממת" ממש...לא רק שנחשף לפני במלוא עוצמתו ההוד וההדר שבנופיו השונים של המדבר הזה, כי אם גם זאת: נתברר לי בצורה שאין מאחוריה כל ספק, כי ה"רוח" של המדבר הזה מצויה ברבים מציוריי, שנוצרו בעיקר במהלכן של שנות השמונים (מבלי שהייתי מודע לכך בזמן היווצרותן). הפגישה כעבור כשלוש שנים עם הנוף המדברי שבאזור מצפה רמון לא רק הבהירה לי ביתר שאת את הקשר בין ציורי הנ"ל לבין הנופים הללו, כי אם גם גיבשה את החלטתי להביא לידי אחדות את מה שציירתי בשנים הנ"ל עם מה שצילמתי במהלכן של השנים 1996 ו 1999.
The water source 2006 (Mixed Media on Canvas 70x100 cm) בסוף 1999 [ליתר דיוק בין ה 3.12.99 לבין 1.1.2000] הצגתי מבחר מעבודות שתי הסדרות הללו בתערוכה ששמה היה "אלים, חיות ורוחות במדבר". התערוכה הוצגה במקביל בשני חללי תצוגה במצפה רמון: ב"מרכז המבקרים" וב"פונדק רמון" [התערוכה ב"מרכז המבקרים" הוארכה לאחר מכן לבקשת המנהלת בחודש נוסף]. בינתיים לאחר התערוכה במצפה רמון נוצרו עבודות לא מעטות נוספות, ובמאי-יוני 2005 הצגתי מבחר נוסף ושונה בעיקרו מתוך שתי הסדרות הנדונות ב"תיאטרון רנה שני" בחדרה, ובתערוכה הנוכחית ב"היכל התרבות" בראשון לציון תוצגנה לראשונה 4 עבודות חדשות גדולות יחסית (טכניקה מעורבת על בד 70/100 ס"מ), שנוצרו ב 2006 – לכבודה של תערוכה זאת. ספטמבר 2006
