"Several artists in this catalogue who have made images of Schubert have also created a set of representations, in a variety of mediums, based on the poems by Wilhelm Müller and set by Schubert as his Winterreise cycle of twenty-four songs. There are other artists who have not produced a Schubert image but who have produced Winterreise-inspired art. The additional names expand the group of Winterreise artists to over fourty, including that of the legendary Lotte Lehmann (1888–1976), the great singer and teacher whose Schubert interpretations are still alive today thanks to her recordings and books; she produced a Winterreise series of her own. While these Winterreise artists do not meet the definition of this article’s premise – an artist who produced an image of Franz Schubert – they were profoundly influenced by Schubert and have produced significant Winterreise artwork. This song cycle seems to have a specific resonance for the contemporary visual artist. Nearly all of the artists in this group were born in the twentieth century, with some works produced around the time of the Schubert 1997 birth bicentenary, and others before 1997 and since. The list of these Winterreise artists follows additional literature discussing Schubert iconography".
